Day Twenty Nine: When I Fell

For me, I loved the show from episode one. But I fell for Doctor/Rose in episode two, “The End of the World,” and it was this scene, right at the end of the episode.

The Doctor is so vulnerable in this moment. He is so lonely and broken; he wants a friend so badly, someone to share his life with, but he’s also afraid. So he takes Rose to the End of her World—to scare her away, to show her how horrible and difficult his life is. With one hand he reaches out for a companion, but with the other her pushes her away. If she leaves, it’s because she couldn’t take it, not because he’s too frightening. Her openness and stubbornness fascinates him, he almost doesn’t think it’s genuine (hence trying to push her away).

But Rose doesn’t back off. She sees how lost and lonely he is and she understands it, she won’t let him push her away. Instead, she pushes back, gets him to open up, assures him that she is with him, that she’s not leaving. She’s not afraid to say that she’s scared or worried, but that’s not enough to get her to leave.

In that moment, he falls irrevocably in love with her.

I think it takes her a little longer to really fall for him. I think we see the first signs when he takes her to see Dickens in the next episode.

By episode four, they’re it for each other. The Doctor gives Rose a key to the TARDIS, his home and only companion since the Time War. Rose is more concerned that he doesn’t leave than she is that she disappeared for a year.

And it’s all downhill, uphill, loop-the-loop in love from there on out.

But this moment, the way he looks at her here: it’s the moment a mighty OTP was born.

Day Twenty-Five: Favorite Fanmix

Well, this was a bit awkward, because despite having made a few fanmixes, I really don’t follow them. So I decided, I’ve got the time, why not make one myself?

This mix is meant to reflect the Doctor’s feelings for Rose throughout series two. It ranges from fear to joy, always haunted by the sense that her life is so short and his is so long. It also reflects the fact that I am an old lady and I like my 90s alternarock.
